Wireless keyboard Shift+Return not working

I have an Apple wireless keyboard Model A1314 paired to a MacBook Air, M1. also paired to the MBA is a Magic Mouse Model A1657.

recently, the Shift+Return key combination does not work. I use this to insert carriage returns on my Viber, Messenger, WhatsApp chats. the issue is on both Left Shift+Return and Right Shift+Return. when I try the Shift+Return combination on my MacBook keyboard, there is no issue.

the shift key works normally in other areas (capitalizing, shift+command+4).

I have tried connecting/disconnecting, unpairing/pairing. no change.

I suspect (but I will not swear in a court of law) that this started when I updated my MacBook to Venture 13.1.

any suggestions on how I can get my Shift+Return to work again?

I'm not sure if I solved the problem or not.

I was trying out different combinations to get a Carriage Return on Viber, Messenger, etc. as an alternative to the Shift+Return. it turns out that Alt+Return will do a CR.

what is puzzling is that, on my MacBook Air keyboard, pressing the Shift+Return does do a Carriage Return, but pressing the same keys on the external keyboard does not.
