Issues with e-SIM or iPhone or both.......

11 Pro Max

iOS 16.2

Dual SIM (regular SIM & e-SIM)

  • I cannot activate e-SIM number with FaceTime / iMessage, always end up stuck with endless "spinning circle"
  • I cannot manually backup WhatsApp (using e-SIM number) to iCloud (ref. separate post)
  • Video- and Audio calls in Apps like LINE, Whatsapp or FaceTime via the e-SIM number result in unexplained repeated microphone / audio drop-outs (ref. separate post)

  1. The cellular service provider of the e-SIM claims all is set properly, normal phone connection via e-SIM number works, I can send and receive SMS and MMS via iPhone over e-SIM number, I receive OTPs via e-SIM number, Cellular data over e-SIM works as well, etc.
  2. Apple Service Center says "nothing wrong with iPhone", no error / log reports, microphone works normally, networks normal, various resets done (network, location & privacy) etc.
  3. I've also contacted App developers (Meta and LINE), they claim there is no issue from their side and "to investigate with Apple".
  4. When I recently registered for a banking app using the e-SIM number, at first registration failed, then I was told by the bank support center to remove the other regular SIM card for the registration, and the registration via e-SIM was subsequently successful - so I tried the same for FaceTime and iMessage, of course no success......

What else can I / should I do .....? Thanks for any pointers / comments / input......

To activate iMessage and FaceTime using your Phone number

First, check to know whether you have an SMS plan enabled at least for One SMS*** with your carrier. Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider) the agency that issued the SIM to you

If your iPhone is used with a carrier not found in the wireless carrier articles, make sure you can send and receive international SMS. (One SMS*** Only)

If you can't turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime - Apple ...

*** You may not have an SMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS services.
