cursor pointer wont’t move

I have the 24” iMac with OS 13.x (ventura), my cursor arrow won’t move; however, the click function does work, I have rebooted my computer 3 times, no change. I have another wireless mouse that I have tried and it does the same thing.

Anyone have any idea on why this is happening or what to do to fix it.

thanks in advance for your help.

All, well I solved the mystery, though embarrassing - I have a pen tablet for editing photos. I had reinstalled OS 13.1 and the issue still persisted, so as I looked at my desktop I saw that the Pen tablet app was booted. What I didn’t notice previously is that I had inadvertently moved the pad and the pen wad now touching the tablet,I went to unplug the tablet and saw the pen touching the tablet, I removed the pen and YES, the mouse work.

I apologize to all for putting you through my bungling

Thanks o all of you for your help, it did help me finally find my mistake

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

That's telling us there are some 3rd party app or apps that are interfering with the mouse. Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

Make / Model of your two mice? Apple? Logitech? Other brand? How are you wireless connecting? Bluetooth? The mouse manufacturer wireless dongle? Are the batteries in the mice fully charged / recharged?

Do have a cabled USB mouse on hand? Any USB mouse will work. It may help so can get a mouse pointer working so you can resolve the issue for the wireless ones.

Ok here is what I have found

1) the issue of not being able to move the pointer/arrow with either of my bluetooth mouse is still happening

2) I bought a cabled mouse and rebooted, same issue, only this time I could move the arrow for about 10 sec then it went down near the trash can and won’t move

3) the arrow just jitters side to side

4) rebooted my iMac using my Superduper backup, no change same issue

So is this an OS problem? Instead of a mouse issue?

Old Toad

I Have booted in safe mode, the cursor work great, no issue. I did remove all login items from the SysPref/general/login items. Don’t know where to look for the Kernel extensions. However, when I rebooted in normal mode still have the issue.

I called apple, decided after the call to reinstall Ventura on my iMac.

assume the 3rd party kernel extensions will not be loaded, AM I right on this?

If not, where do I find them so I can get rid of them in case I still have the issue

Thanks for you for your help
