Apple DVD player won't work with iMac 24"

I recently purchased an iMac 24". I have an Apple DVD player that worked on my previous iMac with Mohave OS. It's connected via a 4-port USB-A to USB-C adapter to one of the USB-C ports on my iMac. I have 3 other USB-A devices plugged into the adapter and they all work fine. The Apple DVD player does not "pull" the DVD when I insert it. The DVD works fine when plugged into the DVD player connected to my TV.

Is the Apple DVD player incompatible with my iMac 24"?

Do not connect the DVD drive to a hub, it must be plugged directly into the back of the iMac using a USB A to USB C adapter.
