thunderbolt audio dropout

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro hooked up to two older Thunderbolt displays using Apple's USBC to Thunderbolt adapters. Recently, past few months, I've experienced a problem where the Thunderbolt Audio drops out after 3-4 seconds of play time. If I switch to the other thunderbolt, I'll get audio for 3-4 seconds, then it will drop out. Switch to the MacBook Audio, it will play all day. Switch back to either Thunderbolt, audio drops out after 3-4 seconds.

Running Monteray with the latest updates.

Very frustrating problem that seems to be related to a software update. Sounds very familiar to the issue apple had with the Studio Display (there is a display firmware fix for Studio). I know my thunderbolt displays are older, but they sound great in my office, so I would really like to get them up and running. Any tips would be appreciated.
