There are 3 available ports on the back of my iMac. The problem is that this 1TB LaCie drive came with 2 sets of connecting cables: 1 USB-C and 1 USB-A
But the USB-C doesn't hold in the back slot. Different size.
Hence, my question .
Have a good W E
Sorry to bother you, but...
I connected that LaCie to the USB port of my iMac's keyboard. Nothing seems to happen, except a small noise and light coming from the device and it's getting warm too.
No progress shown otherwise anywhere, telling me if it's working or just "preparing to backup" as stated on a popup.
FWIW, there is only one size of USB-A and USB-C ports and connectors. You didn't mention which iMac you have but one of the cables should work.
Oh, I doubt the Mac's KB supplies enough mA for a USB Drive.
In System Report>Hardware>USB, what are required & available mAs?
It won't hurt anything to try it. It may or may not work.
Thanks. I'll try
You're welcome. If you are out of ports on the back of your iMac you might want to consider purchasing an inexpensive USB hub.
Thanks for that. You may be right, since nothing shows as "backed up", even if that LaCie stated that it was "preparing" 3 hours ago!
Have a good WE too.
Yep, & Bus powered drives really aggravate the problem, USB1 & 2 only supply 500 mA, USb3 900 mA, a decent Hard Drive requires 1500 mA to spin up, unless they use tricks.
I see you were in good hands. 😎
Personally I would look for a powered hub.
Yep. I will try to solve this soon, since I want to upgrade from High Sierra to Monterey, now.
Just as a precaution.
