Has anybody managed to install Audacity 3.x on Monterey?

I was gratified to see a new Audacity that works with newer Mac OS. And 3.2.3 does work with Monterey. BUT I can't install FFMPEG or the libavformat.dylib files. I have followed the instructions and downloaded installed Macports then installed Ffmpeg using Terminal (twice). The first time Terminal listed pages of dependencies and reported it was done successfully. Finder couldn't find FFmpeg with hidden files revealed so I installed it again. This second time Terminal reported that it had checked the installation and all was ok. But the location is a secret from Finder. As is the location or existence of any temp files.

Has anybody actually succeeded in installing FFmpeg and the .dylib?

the magic spell would be appreciated, if one exists.

1) Download ffmpeg from the location that Barney indicated in his post.

2) Expand the .zip or .7z file you got.

3) You should have a file named "ffmpeg 3". Rename it to just "ffmpeg" (without the quotes).

4) Press Command-N to open a new Finder window. Press Command-Shift-G, type

/usr/local/bin

and press enter

5) Drag the ffmpeg file to the window from the last step

Done.

FWIW, that's not where ffmpeg lives when I installed it for Audacity.
Mine is in ~/Library/Application Support/FFmpegTools

Thanks.

I think that it works with Audacity either way - provided that /usr/local/bin is in the PATH.

The way I did it has the advantage that, since it's in the PATH, it can also be used on its own right from the Terminal prompt.

Thank you for the link. It is one pot the many I had previously tried. Unfortunately I can't use the downloaded files because I do not know what an API is, or whether I have one, or if I do, how too invoke it to turn files into something that will support a specific application. I since downloaded WavePad, whose free version looks as if it does what Audacity does, so I can open, edit and save m4a files. Its interface is more complex than Audacity but it is a free tool that works, so I should not diss it.

Not massively helpful to fill in the rest of the letters. Don't tell me, it is an interface between an application and a user for the purposes of programming.

An actual helpful answer might have been, "Hey Frank, to deploy the API to install ffmpeg in Audacity on Monterey, you open Audacity and then do this...blah blah, blah." Or "Frank, you open Terminal, navigate to Applications and type Audacity.. blah blah."

If you can amplify your answer to one that is helpful I will apologise for biting.
