Macbook always rightclicks for both buttons/gestures

I have twice (at least) had the situation where my MacBook would only right click.

    • If I left click the mouse, or single finger tap the pad, it does a right click.
    • If I right click the mouse or two finger tap the pad, it does a right click.

At the same time my icon bar at the bottom of my screen would make the icons large when I rolled over them with the mouse; this is not normal behavior for my laptop.

The only way out was to reboot. Any suggestions on how to recover from this without a reboot?

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities jschrempp2,

Regarding your mouse and trackpad, we recommend reviewing the related preferences to see what activates the right click. Adjusting preferences may provide a solution.

To change these preferences, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Mouse .

Do the same for your Trackpad.

To change these settings, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Trackpad  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

For the Dock, the bar of icons at the bottom of your Mac's screen, you can disable the magnification effect from Desktop and Dock settings.

To change these settings, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Desktop & Dock  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

You can find this information along with other details on the following page: macOS User Guide

If you're using a different version of macOS, you can select your version from the drop-down menu at the top of that page to get the most relevant information.

We hope this helps!

If the Trackpad/Mouse is not Working:

Uninstall Security Software:

Any Security Software installed? If so, uninstall it. Use the uninstaller to do so. Contact the developer for the correct method of removal. Its privacy settings are probably disallowing it to be accessed.

Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

(Intel-Based Macs Only): Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for the touchpad) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM.

Try Safe Mode:

[Hold Down command key + R key] simultaneously upon boot. In Safe Mode, corrupted system setting files (caches), are intentionally fixed.

  1. Boot: in Safe Mode
  2. Log In: as Same User
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Shut Down: the Mac
  5. Wait: 30 seconds
  6. Boot: the Mac normally
  7. Log In: as Same User
  8. See if can get this to work

“This looks like a standard reply to mouse or track pad not working. You need to read my post for details. This answer is no help; the problem is not persistent.”

For one, I don’t quote people word-for-word. I read it all. Doing so, it’d take up do much space. I quote what what I think stands out about the issue.

Resetting the SMC and the NVRAM is keen here..
