Apple Watch Nightstand Mode not working

I have turned on Nightstand Mode on my new Apple Watch, but the screen goes dark after a few seconds on the charger. I have tried all of the following based on answers on this site to similar questions:

  • Hard reset the watch
  • Power off both the phone and the watch, then power on the phone then the watch
  • Turn off nightstand mode and then turn it back on
  • Change the orientation of the watch on the charger
  • After putting the watch on the charger, tip it up to vertical until it goes into nightstand mode

None of that worked. No matter what I do, the watch display goes dark after a few seconds on the charger. What's the secret?

So the expected behavior is that it is off all night, then comes on a few minutes before the alarm?

If that's the case, I would think the documentation should say:

"the screen will turn on and then gently brighten"

instead of

"the screen will gently brighten"

To me, that wording implies that it was already on.

Is there a way I can get someone from Apple to give an authoritative answer on how it is supposed to work? I guess I need to log a support case? Sounds like nobody from Apple monitors these forums?

That is how it is designed to work, after a few seconds for you to check the time it goes dark. You tap the watch or the night stand itself and it lights up again for a few seconds.

If you would like it to shine all night you can put in a feature request to Apple

Click here > Product Feedback - Apple

NB put your OS and iOS versions etc in the problem text box as the dropdowns are usually out of date.

Are you sure about that? The description of the "Nightstand Mode" feature says "If you have an alarm set on Apple Watch, the screen will gently brighten in the minutes leading up to it".

That seems pretty strange that it would by design be off but also somehow automatically brightening.

It sounds like your watch is behaving exactly as it was designed to operate. But, to answer your first question, in nightstand mode, the watch is NOT designed to be lit continuously all night. You can tap your watch or lightly tap the night stand to gently jostle the watch and your screen will light up.

I've been on this forum for years, and have been an Apple Watch user a LOOOOOONG time. What you're seeing on your watch with Nightstand Mode is how Apple designed it. It's how it works on my Apple Watch. It is how it has worked on every Apple Watch anyone who has come here to ask about.

But sure, feel free to reach out to Apple yourself, if what we're telling you doesn't help you understand this is how it's designed to work. I see LD150 provided links for you to do that.
