Text replacement on iPhone AND iPad

Earlier, when I created a text replacement on my iPhone, the same replacement almost immediately appeared also on my iPad. Some months ago (I believe) this stopped working, and my iPad suddenly had very few text replacements. Is there any way I can get this working again?

Hi there Dlira,

For text replacements to sync across your devices, you'll need to make sure iCloud Drive is turned on for both your iPhone and iPad, and you're signed in with the same Apple ID in Settings:

Go to Settings  > [your name] > iCloud, then turn on iCloud Drive.

Have a look at this link for more information: Save keystrokes with text replacements on iPad

Take care.

Update: I found a workaround. Not a very good one, and not one I like, but it does not give me extremely much work:

If I open a replacement on my iPhone, add a letter to the shortcut and save the adjusted shortcut, it will appear on my iPad immediately. And when I open the same replacement once more, delete this added letter and save it again, the replacement has been added to the iPad with the original shortcut. I will have to do this 70 times, but the procedure will only take me a few minutes.

I would still be happy to hear about it if somebody knows a better way!

Hello Dlira,

We're glad you had the chance to review that article and complete those steps. With the issue continuing, the next step would be to restart both devices. You can find the steps for restarting iPhone X and later devices listed below. These steps, along with steps for restarting other iPhone and iPad models can be found in the following articles.

  1. "Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

While simple, restarting is a great step that can resolve many issues.

Let us know how that goes!

Greetings Dlira,

To help troubleshoot the software being the possible culprit of the syncing issue, let's ensure the iPhone and iPad have the latest software versions installed. To check for update, tap Settings > General > Software Update:

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

If the issue persists, then reach out to Apple Support directly to help investigate the behavior. You can use the following link to reach out: Contact - Official Apple Support

Kind regards.

Thank you for your suggestion. However, it does dot help - a text replacement I make on my iPhone (after doing this) does not appear on my iPad. I had already tried this method after reading about it in the user handbook, and I tried it again after reading your suggestion. Unfortunately with no luck.

Other suggestions? Need for deinstalling + reinstalling something?

Additional information that I realized today: (Status: Today I have 74 text replacements on my iPhone, but only 3 on my iPad - about 70 entries just disappeared from my iPad some weeks ago.) If I create a new entry on my iPhone today, it appears on my iPad. And if I create a new entry on my iPad today, it appears on my iPhone. But the 70+ other entries on my iPhone do not appear on my iPad (and nothing happens if I try to use one of those replacements on my iPad).
