I keep getting the "trust this computer" keypad on my iPhone 8+

Why do I keep getting the "trust this computer" keypad on my iPhone 8+ ever since updating to ios 16? I use my PC for infrequent backups, as I save money that way (instead of the cloud), and about once a week, my phone screen repeatedly comes on with the keypad. I can click cancel or put in the code, it doesn't matter. It won't stop until I physically hook my phone up to my PC with the and go through those motions. If I don't do that, I can't use my phone, and it runs down the battery as the screen stays lit. How about Apple fixing this?

My wife has a cheap Android phone, and she doesn't have these problems.

I am on my 2nd iPhone, and it may be time to switch if Apple doesn't address this problem. I know from reading this forum, I am not the only one experiencing this!

If you have “sync this phone over Wi-Fi” and “sync this phone when connected” enabled you will see that message when the phone connects to power and the Wi-Fi network that your phone uses. If you turn off those features that will stop it from happening.

There’s nothing for Apple to fix; it is a way to protect your phone’s backup from a recently discovered vulnerability. Here are details:

Apple changed the way that worked because of a recently discovered vulnerability that would allow a hacker to create an unprotected backup of an iOS device without the knowledge of the owner, so Apple add a requirement to always require a passcode to be entered on the phone before backing up to a computer. This to assure that the backup was intentional.

It didn't seem to matter whether I typed in my code or hit cancel, it just kept happening. The only time I could get it to stop was when I hooked up my phone to my PC and typed in the code to trust the computer. Then, it was happy until the next weekend. I called Apple and the rep there had me try something about resetting my privacy settings, but that didn't work. I also went into settings off an internet suggestion and reset my network, and then also updated to ios 16.3. I also have a program on my PC called Dr. Fone that I once backed up to when iTunes wasn't working, and while my phone was attached via cable, there was a check box with a checkmark in it to schedule a back up to my computer on Dr. Fone, which I then unchecked. This past weekend, I didn't get the keypad coming up. Don't know if some of that fixed it, or if it is permanently fixed, as it only showed up on the weekends. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think you could try putting in the code, as long as you're not around any strange computers or a wifi you don't have control of. Good luck!

And yet, I did not receive a notice from Apple to inform me of this change, but had to research it myself on the 'net, until I got to this forum. I don't know for sure that this is fixed as I could go a period of time before it showed up again, but time will tell on that. I think the easier thing would have been for Apple to update iTunes so that it defaulted to manual synch, or didn't allow it in the first place!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Lawrence -

I tried your suggestion about unchecking the boxes in iTunes, but this weekend, I noticed my phone still had the keypad popping up and had to turn the phone off until I was able to connect my phone to my computer and manually backup the phone. I just tried another suggestion on the forum to reset my network. We'll see if that corrects the problem. I still think it would be better if Apple included something in the settings which allows a user to shut off any backups and eliminate this problem. A suspicious mind might think Apple is trying to get me to back up to the cloud or replace my phone with a newer one with new costs.
