Need help with sharing owned content in Apple Music app - only getting error messages

why do i get error message "unable to share play, this media type is unavailabe while using shareplay in the music app" when I try to share a downloaded CD that I own with a friend???? I really would like to know how to share items in Music app that I own.

I have tried share playlist but that only sends a picture.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong and provide directions.

Also, I am new to apple so I'm a bit clueless what the difference is between share playlist and shareplay.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities cassie1025,

SharePlay allows you to stream TV shows, movies, and music in sync with other while on a FaceTime call together.

When you share a playlist, you're sharing a collection of tracks that others can listen to on their own.

Listen to music together during a FaceTime call

You can get together and listen to an album or favorite playlist with others on a FaceTime call. Anyone on the call who has access to the music (for example, through a subscription, a transaction, or a free trial) on a device that meets the minimum system requirements can listen along, see what’s next, add songs to a shared queue, and more.

A FaceTime call, showing participants sharing audio content from Apple Music. The album cover is pictured near the top of the screen, and the title and audio controls are just below it.

1: Start a Group FaceTime call.
2: Go to the Home Screen, then open a music streaming app that supports SharePlay (for example, the Music app ).
3: Select the music you want to listen to, then tap the Play button to begin listening to the music together. (Others on the call may have to tap Join SharePlay to hear the music.)

For everyone on the call who has access to the content, the music starts playing at the same time. People who don’t have access are asked to get access (through a subscription, a transaction, or a free trial, if available).

Each person can use the music controls to pause, rewind, fast-forward, scrub to a different part of the song, or go to the next track. And anyone on the call can add songs to the shared queue.

Use SharePlay to watch, listen, and play together in FaceTime on iPhone

As with SharePlay, if you share a playlist, the person you're sharing it with would need to have access to the same songs to play them.

If you listen with compatible Beats or AirPods, you can share music with other nearby compatible headphones using the steps found here: Share audio with AirPods or Beats headphones

We hope this helps!

Hey there cassie1025,

From the details already provided, it shows pretty much all the different ways to share music.

One specific link we wanted to share again was this one if you're still trying to use SharePlay feature to share songs. This link provides details about the SharePlay feature that you mentioned in your original message: Use SharePlay to watch, listen, and play together in FaceTime on iPhone

The section 'Listen to music together during a FaceTime call' is the section you'll want to use when using SharePlay. Keep in mind that there are also the prerequisites listed to meet for all that want to listen to the same song, and sometimes even a subscription may be needed. Some content may not be available across different countries/regions. We recommend reviewing this article in full for more details about using SharePlay.

We wanted to also add to what's already been explained. If you wanted to share music to a different app, you'll need to have an Apple Music subscription as per the requirements listed within this link: How to share music to Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device

If you're following all of the steps, and meeting the requirements for the different share features you'd like to use, we recommend letting Apple Support know what's been tried as they'll be in the best position to assist further: Get Support

Cheers!
