iPad doesn’t have a removable storage drive - but for Cellular models, may have a SIM card:

Remove or switch the SIM card in your iPad - Apple Support

Assuming you can access the iPad, you can erase and properly prepare the iPad for disposal:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If you cannot access the iPad, you needn’t be overly concerned for the data. The iPad uses an encrypted filesystem; the iPad Passcode unlocks the encryption keys that are required to access any locally stored data.

Without the Passcode, the encryption keys are not released to the OS - keeping data beyond reach. With only a limited number of chances to enter an incorrect Passcode, before the iPad is disabled, you cannot brute-force access. Once disabled, the encryption keys are automatically destroyed.
