iMac won't automount server drive after Ventura update

Hello,

I have a 2020 iMac that I recently upgraded to macOS 13 (now 13.1). I have a 2014 Mac Mini that runs macOS 10.14, and has a RAID drive connected to it. The RAID drive is hosted via AFP and SMB. For legacy reasons, I use AFP to connect to it regularly.

In prior system versions, I have put the mounted server RAID drive as a Login Item in System Preferences on my iMac. I have never had an issue with it then automatically mounting on the desktop each time I log into my iMac. Since upgrading to macOS 13, probably 90% of the time or so, I get an error about being unable to connect to the server when the machine starts up and logs me in. About 10% of the time it works fine. No matter when I connect manually, it works just fine - it is only when the machine tries to mount the drive automatically at startup does it fail.

Both machines are hardwired via Ethernet to an AirPort Extreme base station (last generation).

As you can imagine, it is really starting to get irritating that it does not just work automatically the way it always did. Any help would be appreciated.

La Porta,

This function has been moved. Here is how you do it. First thing you will need to manually login to you server(s) and mount them on the desktop. Then go to the Apple Menu, select System Settings, select General from the left side panel, select Login Items. At the top of the window there is a Open at Login list. Click the + icon. This will bring up a window which you use to navigate to where your severs are mounted (the Desktop). Then just select the server(s)(command + click for multiple servers). Then click Open. The servers will be added to the Open at Login list.

Hello La Porta,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are connecting to another Mac over a network to access a hard drive. Right?

In that case, we'd recommend starting with the guidance in If your Mac can’t connect to another computer - Apple Support. The following sections may be particularly helpful given the details you've provided so far.

"Make sure the computer or server is available

  • The computer or server may have been shut down or restarted, or may have been disconnected from the network.

Try reconnecting, or contact the person who administers the computer or server.

  • If the computer is using Bonjour or is a Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, make sure it’s on the same local network or subnetwork as your Mac.

If a Windows (SMB/CIFS) server has the Internet Connection Firewall turned on, you may not be able to connect to it.

Note: If the computer is not on your local network or subnetwork, you may be able to connect to it by choosing Go > Connect to Server and typing its address in the Connect to Server dialog.

Check your network connection

Your Mac may be disconnected from the network.

  • To check your connection, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) The indicator next to your type of network connection should be green.

Note: To connect, the server or shared computer and your Mac must be on the same network or, if you’re using Go > Connect to Server, make sure they’re both connected to the internet and aren’t connected to private networks."

Best of luck.

Faith has not understood the question. LaPorto (and many more of us) cannot automatically mount an external NAS drive like we could in Monterey and earlier OS. In past OS you would attach a NAS mount instruction to the User account and then when that User logged in, the Mac would automatically - with no other actions - mount that drive from a NAS on your network. Ventura seems to have no provision for that. The question is straight forward and should not need us all to call Apple Support and waste their time. In Ventura OS how do you mount a NAS drive automatically at login with no other user action?

Hello Faith, thank you for your response. However, none of that helps me because I can connect to my server…the iMac is just having issues auto mounting the server when the iMac starts up. As I had said, it has worked just fine for a good seven years or so, until the iMac was updated to Ventura. Therefore, the issue must be with the new OS somehow.

Correct...this should be a very simple thing. There is nothing wrong with the server. Heck, my MacBook Pro 2016 with macOS 12 automounts the server while I am at work through my home cable modem and router port forwarding! The issue is that macOS 13 either does not work properly to achieve this, or is unable to do so. I need clarification on how to go about this properly, if it is even possible any more.
