My MacBook Air needs an update, but it's not available
I am trying to update my software to use Ableton live and I can't update the software or version of safari. Can you please help?

Which model MBA? What have you tried? Any error messages?
If you're running Sierra now your Mac may be simply too old to run the macOS version required for your other software. In that case the only options are to not use the software, to see if an older version is available, or to buy a newer model Mac.

Back Up your Mac First: Be certain you Create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac, so that way you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reconfiguration.
What is your MacBook type? Check via the apple logo in the menu bar>about this Mac.
It could be that when you go to the App Store to update (if you're really running Sierra) that your Mac is not showing any updates. Then it is too old to upgrade further
what year is the MacBook so I can check and tell me what error came up
(I had a problem with my 2017 MacBook Air with it not installing latest macOS even it is compatible)
