Non-apple music purchased music disappeared from iphone

I have a fairly large collection of non-apple music mp3 collected from various sources (bandcamp downloads, cd rips, old hard drives) that I had on my iPhone 11. I recently updated my iphone and cannot see these mp3s in apple music. When I plug my IPhone into my laptop it lists all these mp3s as still being on the device. I tried to manually put the songs back on the IPhone but was only partially successful, a fair amount of them wouldn't take no matter how many times I tried. WTF?

The songs play fine on my computer, I don’t have a subscription to Apple Music, and I have sync on. Some of the music has come back but others have not, no matter what I do.

Hello Soupandsalads,

Are you able to play these songs on your computer without issue? If so, are you seeing any error message when attempting to sync these songs back to the iPhone? Also, are you subscribed to Apple Music? If so, you'll want to make sure that Sync Library is enabled on your iPhone and your computer. You can find those steps listed below and outlined in the following article.

  1. "Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is signed in with the same Apple ID that you use with your Apple Music subscription.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Music.
  4. Turn on Sync Library.
  5. Turn on Sync Library on your other devices."

Use Sync Library to access your music library across your devices

Let us know how that goes!
