it is amazing, no one wants to WARN users about dangerous things that can happen with "Mail" app settings, such as this.

images, html-objects etc inside email's body can have HARMFUL code / VIRUS / MALWARE / RANSOMWARE / PHISHING-WARE, etc, etc, etc,

so you are not suppose to auto view/open images from all email senders.

that is why its good & secure step/measure, to turn-off auto load/view of images in email, by changing settings inside the email-client software settings . apple macOS "Mail" app/software is email-client software.

when image is blocked from auto-loading in an email, then that email will have a button in top or bottom, to click on it to show the image or show all images,

... use that button, IF your TRUST the sender.

after pressing the "Show Images" or "Show Pictures" button (or similar button),

if pic/img is still NOT shown, then it could be that it is very big picture (or many pictures), & it could also be that email-server has reached distribution capacity so distribution speed is slow so download is slow, or it could also be that there is some problem(s) in email-client software.

pls wait for apple devs to fix bugs, in next sub-version based update,

and, in the mean time, you can use "Thunderbird" email-client, to try/test.

Hello lightndp,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If you're having trouble downloading images and attachments on your Mac using the Mail app, let's see if these steps can help resolve the issue.

View, save, or delete email attachments in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Sometimes to view an attachment, you would want to follow these steps.

"View email attachments

  1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, select a message that includes attachments.
  2. Look for the Attachment icon  below the date the message was sent in the message list.
  3. In the message, do one of the following:
    • Open an attachment in an app: Double-click the attachment.
    • Preview an attachment without opening it: Select the attachment, then press the Space bar, or force click the attachment.

Some attachments—like images or one-page PDF documents—are displayed directly in the message. If you’d rather view the attachment as an icon, Control-click it, then choose View as Icon from the shortcut menu. To display the attachment again, Control-click it, then choose View in Place."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
