Frame Rate Matching does not work in 4k ?

I noticed that when video output is set to 4K, then frame rate matching does not work. When a 24p material is played it does not output 24fps. But when video output is set to 1080p then it outputs 24fps. Is this is a defect or is this how it supposed to work ?

Although I would expect frame rate matching to work regardless of type of output selected.

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 16

This issue appears new for this forum, in that I don't recall this being reported before.

For which content does this happen? Is this about content from Apple (Apple TV+ or iTunes Store), or content from a different streaming provider? Or is this about Home Sharing, or AirPlay?

How did you determine the source frame rate? How did you determine the output frame rate?

When it is not output as 24fps, then what was detected instead?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I also think it used to work before but something broke in one of the updates.

I check the frame rate by pressing "display" button on my TV's remote. It displays the current resolution and frame rate of the video being played. I have a Sony x900f but I think almost any tv should have this feature.

I am playing the video from the Netflix app on Apple TV 4K. Typically mainstream movies have a frame rate of 24fps and shows have 30-60fps.

When it is not output as 24fps it defaults to the video output set in Apple TV which is 4K SDR (60hz).

Hope this helps. Any more questions or info let me know, I think this need to be fixed.

I’m not seeing any of this on my Apple TV 4K 2022. I have both Frame Rate and Dynamic Range matching turned on, and default set to 4K SDR (60hz) and 24fps content plays at 24fps, 50hz plays at 50hz, etc Chroma is not locked at all in my system.

So whatever is going on with your setup it’s not the Apple TV. It must be some kind of interaction with your gear.

No not just Netflix (otherwise I would have contacted Netflix first). I tried TV+ (apple) app, Movie (iTunes) app, and it happened with both. I did not try Prime or Hulu but I am pretty sure it happens there as well.

As for title there are several but if I had to give one example - I tried watching a trailer of the movie Devotion on both the apple apps, and on Netflix it was movie Forrest Gump. But keep in mind its not just limited to these titles, you can choose any mainstream studio/theatre movie.

I noticed one more thing but perhaps I will open another thread for that. The chroma setting of 4:2:0 is available with 4K 50hz format only. Why not with any other format ? after all that's the base standard of chroma for any media from SD to HD to 4K ? for almost all other output formats its locked to 4:4:4.
