Resolutions instead of scaling options in Displays settings

I have a 4k display attached to my 13 inch, M1, 2020 MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura 13.1. The display is connected via HDMI to a USB-C hub. Until recently (not sure if related to the OS upgrade to Ventura), the MacBook would automatically select the 4k resolution of the display and offer me the usual scaling options with thumbnails displaying how large text and buttons would appear on the screen. I could change the scaling, but the resolution would always be 4k and the image was sharp.

This somehow changed. Now I get offered several resolutions, but no scaling options. When I select the 4k resolution (3840x2160), the image is sharp, but text is way too small to read. I can select the full HD resolution (1920x1080), but then the image is blurry. When I then right-click on the full HD resolution, I can select "Use default mode" from a drop-down menu. Then the scaling/text size stays the same as for full HD but the resolution is 4k again, with a sharp image.

I really do not understand what is going on. My MacBook is clearly capable of using the 4k resolution of my screen but I somehow do not get the options to change the scaling of that resolution.

As a side note, "show all resolutions" just gives me more (bad) resolution options, all of which are blurry.

Hi, PeanutFun, what happens if you hold down the “option” key on your keyboard while picking a resolution? You should see “detect display” and “native for display”, as grant bennet-alder mentioned here, the Mac has to “ask” the display and the display has to “answer” back with what it’s capable of, its name, etc… also, how is the display connected, eg, hdmi 2.0/miniDisplayPort/USB-C( Thunderbolt 3? You might want to consider an app like SwitchResX… here’s a link for one model of LG monitor: https://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/software-firmware?csSalesCode=27UQ850-W.AUS.. if you know your exact model name, type it in there, and look for a software/firmware update ( if there is one, and if needed, ) and give it a try… for later versions of the Mac OS .. there’s a way to adjust what things look like ( i forget the exact name though)

anyways, I tried
