How do I go to the next page in Books without the sliding animation bit?

I'm reading a book on the mac. I press the R arrow key to go to the next page. I get a slide show. The page slides off to the left, something goes dark, and then I get my page. I just want to get the page. It's really annoying the way it is, and I can't find any settings for this. TIA!

BTW, it's not as bad pressing the L arrow key to go back a page, but I read books in the forward direction.

I don't want to change the number of pages I see. I don't want to scroll. I just want to go to the next page without the sliding darkening animation show bit. The View menu doesn't have any scrolling items on it anyway. The AA menu doesn't have any, either.

I can't find those entries in the user guide, and I can't find anything that will solve my problem, either. I suspect that's just how it works. I was hoping not, but no one here has come up with a solution.

Perhaps from the " Apple Books User Guide "

and an excerpt for that link above

Show one or two pages in a book

  1. In the Books app  on your Mac, click Books (or another collection) in the sidebar, then double-click a book.
  2. Drag the window’s sides left or right until you see one or two pages

Turn off pagination in a book

You can scroll through a book instead of turning the pages.

  1. In the Books app  on your Mac, click Books (or another collection) in the sidebar, then double-click a book.
  2. Move the pointer to the top of the book, click the Appearance button , then turn on Vertical Scrolling or Horizontal Scrolling, depending on the format of the book.
  3. If the Appearance button isn’t available, choose View > Vertical Scrolling or Horizontal Scrolling.
