It takes sometimes up to 1 mile for my Apple Watch to register my heart rate whilst I’m running.
is this normal for everyone else? Or is my watch crap?

So Heart Rate works when you're standing, but not when you're running? If that's so, it's probably not your watch. I could be that the watch is slipping while you run. Have you tried tightening the band? See if that helps.

No tattoos and I tighten it before I run.
it only kicks in after 1 mile or so.
