What app are you using? The default mail app or a third party one? What email provider are you using? You might want to try restarting your device first. Also, try checking this article: If you can’t send email on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

I would try removing the account from the device and logging back in.

I am using hotmail and don’t have a problem with my iPad. My wife has the same problem with her iPhone 12.
