country codes first 2 letters of the serial number

For models after 2010, the first two letters indicate the location where it was manufactured:

  • F – Fremont, California, USA
  • XA, XB, QP, G8 – USA
  • RN – Mexico
  • CK – Cork, Ireland
  • VM – Foxconn, Pardubice, Czech Republic

  • EE, QT, UV – Taiwan
  • FK, F1, F2 – Foxconn, Zhengzhou, China
  • W8 – Shanghai, China
  • DL, DM – Foxconn, China
  • DN – Foxconn, Chengdu, China
  • YM, 7J – Hon Hai/Foxconn, China
  • 1C, 4H, WQ, F7 – China
  • C0 – Tech Com, Quanta Computer Susidiary, China

Are you are looking for the country for which the computer is localized (keyboard and OS version)?

The code at the front of the serial numbers is the code for the manufacturing plant, not the localization. It may also be somewhat outdated. My 2017 iMac 5K, 2012 Macbook Pro, iPad 5, and iPhone SE 2020 have numbers that start with codes not on that list. (D2; DX: and FF)

Hopefully the number lookup sites Leroy lists will show the code that indicates localization. Apple's lookup does not, and I have not seem a comprehensive list of the "model/order number" codes that supposedly have the localization info. The code is easy to find on an iDevice

but, unless a new macOS version like Ventura that is more like iOS anf has Settings > About, the number you need is hard to find and may require a call to Apple,
