If an App has Gone Missing, Somehow..

Reinstall the macOS:

Seems the Photos app has gone missing, somehow. So, reinstall the macOS. If you reinstall the macOS, nothing would be deleted. All intended, original files and ppps that came on your macOS would be reinstalled. It’s all about keeping your system files intact.

1. First, Create a Time Machine backup:

Important: Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

2. Reinstall the macOS:

What is happening, when you try to use Photos on your Mac?

If you are getting an error message, that you need to install a different version of Photos, there is a mismatch between the Photos Library you are trying to open and the current system version.

If Photos is giving the error message that you need to use a newer version of Photos,

  • you may have accidentally used a link to an older version Photos, for example the Dock icon may be still linked to an older version or an alias on your Desktop. Try to launch Photos by clicking the Photos.app in the Applications folder, to be sure, you are using the correct version, installed as part or your system.
  • or you may be trying to open a Photos Library, that has been touched by Photos on a Mac with a newer system and can no longer be opened by Photos 6 on Big Sur. In that case you will need to upgrade your Mac to the same system version as the system, that has been used to open the library. It is not possible to share Photos Libraries between two Macs with different system versions, unless you are sharing the library as an iCloud Photos Library in iCloud.

If you downgraded your Mac to an older system version, you have to restore an older version of your Photos Library from a backup of the system version you downgraded to. Photos has no tollt to downgrade a Photos library.
