Facebook scrolling Problem using Safari (iOS on iPad)

Except that it's happening across the board on versions of Safari that were last updated long before the problems started yesterday. Safari 16 in Ventura and Safari 13 in High Sierra, neither recently updated, but equally affected only since yesterday. Explain that.

In all the threads on Apple, Reddit, and MacRumors discussing this Facebook issue in the last 24 hours, I have not seen one person say their version of Safari on Mac is working fine with Facebook. Not everyone applies updates on the same day, and not all versions need an update. For all versions of Safari to break for one particular website ALL on the exact same day points to one thing... the website.

Because website programmers sometimes have to work around various browser issues and quirks. A site that works great in Firefox might work slightly different in Explorer or Edge. Some new/advanced HTML or CSS code that works one way in Chrome, might work a different way in Safari, or not at all. It's been this way since the beginning of the web. Getting better, but never perfect and no two browsers work exactly the same.

Considering how complex and bloated Facebook has become, I am surprised it works at all half the time.

In this case, Facebook has rolled out some weird change to their client-side code that seems to be affecting all versions of Safari. It's even affecting Safari on Mac High Sierra despite that version of Safari getting no recent updates.

So no, this one is not Apple's fault and we're now at the mercy of Meta.

My Facebook feed started "jumping and scrolling" on my Macbook Pro yesterday (Jan 14). FB groups are fine. Only the newsfeed is unusable, and only with Safari. Firefox is better but still jumpy. Chrome is rock solid. FB is also fine on my iPhone.

Clearly, Facebook rolled out an update that is incompatible with the desktop version of Safari. I'm seeing this exact same issue reported in multiple forums (below). I've reported it to FB for what little that's worth. Hopefully Tim Cook will read this, pick up is Zuckphone, and get this ironed out pronto! 😉

On my ipad I always request the “desktop” version. I changed to mobile version and it works ok now. Though the mobile version sucks. Click the aA in the address bar and try it..

Macbook Pro with Safari 16.2 - Facebook not usable because of skipping and auto scrolling. There are no FB issues when I tried scrolling on Firefox.

You updating your iPad yesterday would coincide with Facebook rolling out new code yesterday.

Safari v13.1.2 on High Sierra (10.13.6) running on a Mac Pro. No updates yesterday. Safari was last updated months ago and yet the same problem started yesterday for me too.

This is a Facebook problem.

It's a Facebook problem, and it's fixed now. Quit/Restart Safari.

(Funny how the problem came and went and most people never did any Apple/Safari software updates. The rest of you that did updates before/during/after ... it made zero difference. lol)

I've got the same problem too on my Mac with Safari. I tried Edge on Mac and the problem is not there. So, I suppose that Facebook made an update, but Safari have a problem to manage it.

I have tested Chrome and it works perfectly fine. I would suggest everyone use Google Chrome until the facebook update has been completed.

I've got the same problem too on my Mac Desktop with Safari. I tried Chrome and the problem goes away. It has to be specific to Safari.

We have also recently installed an iOS update and have the problem. Seems like a Safari problem... Facebook works fine on a PC and on other browsers... just not on iPad with (latest) iOS/Safari. It appears to be "Safari with iOS 16 or above". Tried it with an older iOS/Safari and no problems.

Seems to not be a problem when using Chrome on my Mac but Safari does this. Words cannot describe how little I like Chrome though. Much prefer Safari but for the time being until this gets fixed at FB or Apple, will have to use Chrome for that one website.

Switching to m.facebook.com is the workaround I am using. I have no issues with the mobile site. I'm not going to download the app. This confirms for me that it is a FB problem and not an Apple problem.

Same problem with Safari and continuous Facebook scrolling. Began Jan. 14.

No problem with Facebook using Chrome or Firefox.

You may want to test Safari now. I think Facebook corrected the scrolling / refresh issue. Works fine on my machine now and I had done no updates.
