Good news! If by chance you have two keyboards in settings > general > keyboard > keyboards, it is easy to wind up with the wrong hardware mapping. Best to have only one unless you really need to spellcheck in both languages.

You need to give details about the "wrong characters" to get accurate help.
go to settings / general / keyboard / hardware keyboard and tap over at the right edge. Make sure the mapping that fits your keyboard is checked (and not "automatic")
Thanks again. All the keyboard setting were and are correct. However, I performed the digital version of 'kicking the tire." and switched from Qwerty (US) to Spanish and them back again to the US keyboard to see if that would stop the hiccup. Low and behold it worked.
Thanks again, if it weren't for your prompting I wouldn't have stumbled on the solution.

What do you have on the list in settings / general / keyboard / keyboards?
What is checked when you tap over at the right edge in settings / general / keyboard / hardware keyboard?
Is your Logitech the standard us layout (@ on the 2 key)?
Thank you very much, Tom. I did follow the advice you posted in 2020 prior to seeking advice via this forum. In addition, I have replaced the batteries and updated the Apple iPad software, all to no avail. The last time this occurred it was a battery issue, but this time it is a stumper. When I go to type my email address the '@' comes out as a quotation mark, ". That is the most annoying since I type the ampersand quite often.
Thanks again, I appreciate your speedy reply,
