Numbers permissions

A new Numbers file can't be saved, Numbers says I don't have permission - choose file in finder and choose Get Info, then change permissions. Did so for the file and every folder above that. Still won't save.

No, saving to my Mac hard drive. I've given read+write permission to Admin, me, Staff, and everyone to the file, the folder it's in, the folder that folder is in. Started a new Numbers file, pasted just the data from the file I'm having trouble with (which is small and just started today with data only typed directly in) and I can't even save it. It says I don't have permission, that I can duplicate and work with the duplicate, but if I do that the duplicate says I don't have permission, to go to Finder and find the file and change permissions - but since it was just created it isn't even in Finder.

From your description this seems unlikely to be a Numbers problem per se. To test you might try saving a Pages document and seeing if you have the same problem there.

If you haven’t done so already you may also want to do some basic troubleshooting, restart your Mac, sign into another user account on your Mac and try saving there, etc.

Another step you might consider is checking your disk with Disk Utility (do Spotlight search to find it).

Also you might double check to make sure you have updated Numbers and macOS to the latest versions that will run on your hardware.
