First of all is there a group name for these dots?
I've lost the dots in my menu bar at the top of screen. They appear on every window but I remember them as a permanent fixture in my menu bar. As my Son tells me "It's user error Dad" and he's right. As always your help is appreciated.
Mac mini, macOS 12.6
FWIW, the dots never appear in the menu bar. Only in the tops of windows.

Because they don't belong there, and never have, just as dialabrain said.
As I've mentioned, the windows controls never appeared in the Menu Bar. If they did, they would be called Menu Bar controls.
If you are in full screen, hovering your mouse cursor at the top of the screen should cause them to appear with the menu bar.

Sorry, I don't understand. You already said they appear at the top of all your windows and as I mentioned, they never appeared in the Menu Bar in any version of macOS/OS X.
Thanks to you both. Barney actually had the best answer plus he answered the bonus question about the window controls. The menu bar is the stationary bar at the top left of the screen (with the Apple) Right? I can't make it happen.
