How to separate 2 users from same Apple id

My kids have their own iphones, phone numbers but both are under same Apple Id. The Apple id is under my daughters name and contact details. How can I separate and create a new apple id to my son’s phone so that he won’t loose all the data? (Phone numbers, pictures, whatsupp discussions etc.)

Hello,

Here are two informational documents to start with, and the rest it about trying to sort the data.

Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID --> Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

For a child (under 13 in most countries): Create an Apple ID for your child - Create an Apple ID for your child - Apple Support

Merging Apple accounts (IDs) or transferring data is not officially supported, nor can it be done easily or completely. Read the links below for things you may need to do to transfer as much as is possible.

Apps and media bought with one ID are permanently associated with that ID. Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs.

- Set up Family Sharing - Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

Share folders with iCloud Drive --> Share files and folders in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Read How to use Shared Albums in Photos on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac - Apple Support about about how to share photos.

If you have signed into the first ID on a device then fortunately when you sign out of that ID, do not erase the device, then sign in with a different ID, it asks you in most cases if you wish to merge the data from the two IDs on your device. Say yes and later delete individual items from the other ID that you do not want. Note, in How to save apps and progress on one Appl… - Apple Community a Community Specialist says, "you will not be able to transfer the meta data from one Apple ID to another. Once you switch to another Apple ID the information associated with the old Apple ID will be gone except for physical content on the device like photos and videos."

If another Apple ID is signed in you may need to enter the password for that ID to sign out of that ID first.

Have one child sign out of the shared account and sign into the same device using the new ID. When the child does this the device will say there is data from another ID on the device, do you want to erase this. Say no (maybe several times). Data that is actually on the phone itself vs. only present in iCloud will then merge into his/her new iCloud account (which is empty to start with). So if there were too many photos in the first ID to all fit on the phone, those won't remain because they were't actually on the phone to start with, only in iCloud. Those will have to be shared across using photo sharing. However, things like Contacts will be on both devices and as long as you don't say to delete them, the Contacts from the old ID will remain on the phone. Your second child can then get rid of individual ones that aren't wanted. The same with photos, etc.

Items purchased from Apple can't be transferred but many can be shared with Family Sharing which you will likely be using anyway if these are children under 13.
