error message from apple mail

I got an error message (see pic) on my macbook to say that my apple mail could not send a message from my Google account. I have no problem working round that but the message seems to be permanently on my screen whenever I open my mail and I can't find any way to delete it. I have to select "go to favourite mailbox" from "messages" on the toolbar. Does anyone know how to delete this message?

Hi zipstarman,

Here's something from the Mac user guide that might be helpful:

"In the Mail app  on your Mac, if the Send button  is dimmed in the toolbar of your message, or your message can’t be sent using the outgoing Mail server, try these suggestions.

  • Make sure the outgoing (SMTP) mail server is specified as directed by the provider of your email account. See Verify an email account’s outgoing server.
  • Choose Window > Connection Doctor, then follow the instructions displayed in the Details column.
  • If there’s a firewall problem, verify that firewall software isn’t blocking email traffic on port 25, 465, or 587. Also check whether you’re affected by another firewall, such as software installed separately from macOS or built into an internet sharing router, or administered by your email account provider. Contact the appropriate person for information."

Take care.

Hey there zipstarman,

If you are still seeing this error message in the Mail app on your Mac, let's next ensure that your Mac is fully updated. This installs feature improvements and bug fixes that can resolve unexpected behavior like this. These steps from Update macOS on Mac walk you through how to back up and update:

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
• Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
• Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
Software Update windowe
3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If this continues after updating, then Apple Support would be the best suited to continue to assist. Contact them using the last link we previously provided or by calling the phone number most applicable to you from here: Contact Apple for support and service

Cheers!

Thank you for this. Unfortunately my issue is not with sending a message but with the error message itself. It has become the default home page every time I open my mail. The red and orange buttons to close / minimise it are greyed out and the green button does nothing. I have tried command-delete and every combination of shift, option, command etc. even taking all my accounts offline and restarting but it doesn't go away. If anyone can tell me how to delete it I would be very grateful!
