When I have a contact without a phone number imessage doesn't use their name only their email.

So if I create a a contact without a phone number and then imessage doesn't use their name only there email. This is particularly annoying because I use VoiceOver and now always pronouncing my contacts' names wrong on imessage, because it's not there names, it's there emails, even though the name is right there in the contact. How do I stop this?

NK_00emt,

Is this new behavior or has this always been the case for contacts with only an Apple ID in their contact card? Can we test deleting and recreating a contact?

What you can do is delete the contact card from the Contacts app Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad

To delete a contact:
1. Open Contacts and tap the contact that you want to delete.
2. Tap Edit.
3. Scroll Down and tap Delete Contact then tap Delete Contact again to confirm.

Then, from the Messages app, launch the conversation thread, tap on contact information at the top, then the ‘i’, then Info. Choose to ‘Create New Contact’ and set it up with their name. Is there any change?

Thanks.

Hello NK_00emt,

Do you notice this same issue with VoiceOver if you include a phone number in one of the contacts? Testing that can help further narrow down what may be happening.

Also, are both of your devices fully up to date? If not, please follow the steps in here to update.

Hey there NK_00emt,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, do you sync your contacts with iCloud or another third-party email account?

If unsure, you can check what contacts are synced to which email account by opening the Contacts app, and tapping "Lists" at the top left corner of the page. If the contact is synced with a third-party account, does the issue persist if you recreate the contact under your iCloud account and send a message?

Keep us updated on the results, and we'll continue from there.

Take care!

When I have a contact without a phone number imessage doesn't use their name only their email.
