Trying to mount an external drive that's not recognised.
Using terminal, I enter. sudo mkdir /volumes/
It asks for my password, but the there is key icon that will allow any entries.
Can anyone on how to get around this?

in terminal the characters you type when entering your password are never echoed. You just type "blind" and hit return.
to check this, type a command that does NOT require sudo, and see if you can get it to go:
sudo diskutil list
password:
If you and 'entering passwords' get together, you will see the list of drives.
mkdir is used on a drive that is already mounted, to create a new directory structure. it is equivalent to the Finder "New Folder" command.
If your dive will not mount, you should use Disk Utility and try its Mount command. if it refuses, you may have to repair the disk Directory with the repair disk function.
