can I use more than two HomePods for surround sound?

I have an appleTV 4k acting as a hub, two Homepods (gen 1) as theatre speakers. Is there any point in putting more HomePods in the room? If so what is the minimum - HomePod minis or the HomePod (gen 2)?

I don't believe Apple has provided any support for using more than two speakers.
