Touch ID fails first try after wake from sleep

When my Mac wakes from sleep, Touch ID fails the first time and asks for my password. But if I then hit ESC (thus re-locking screen) and wake it again, Touch ID works, and continues to work fine the rest of the day. Even if I put it to sleep manually (Apple Menu->Sleep), Touch ID works fine on wake; it seems to only happen after a prolonged sleep overnight.

The old rules—

There are a few instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

• If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.

• If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.

• If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy

• If you are trying to unlock Users & Groups Preferences (when FileVault is on)

• If 5 wrong fingerprint attempts

maybe something has changed in the new Ventura— I have seen other similar post as yours...

Interesting; but none of those conditions apply here. Also, it's odd that it prompts for TouchID, but the fingerprint fails, but then after ESC/re-wake, TouchID succeeds. I've even tried initially waiting a few seconds before scanning my finger in case the TouchID sensor takes longer to wake for some reason...

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Leave login session active & let MacBook go to sleep overnight
  2. Wake with keyboard or mouse activity -- get TouchID prompt
  3. Scan finger -- receive password prompt instead of unlocking
  4. Do not type password; just hit ESC. Screen saver/screen lock re-engages.
  5. Wake again with keyboard or mouse activity. Receive TouchID prompt again.
  6. Scan finger.
  7. Success!

A few other things to note:

  • MBP is connected to power overnight
  • Screen saver is set to require password immediately
  • Set to turn off display if inactive for 30 minutes on power adapter. But this does not appear to cause the problem if I'm away that long during the day. Only a prolonged sleep like overnight.
