This worked for me. I was in the exact same situation, having tried all of the above. I unplugged the external monitor, and pressed command-space, and the Spotlight menu appeared, but half off the screen, suggesting that it was indeed running, just not visible due to some bug. Thanks!!!

Try going to System Settings, Keyboard, Click button 'Keyboard Shortcuts', then click 'Spotlight' in the list on the left. Insure that 'Show spotlight search' is enabled. Then press Command + Spacebar. If it's not set to Command + Spacebar, double click it and set it to Command + Spacebar by entering those keys together.

From the Terminal.app you can copy and paste:

sudo mdutil -i on /

your psswd will not echo on screen type it in anyway, use the enter\return key to proceed.

you should get confirmation— Indexing enabled.

Quit Terminal.

On the Settings > Siri & Spotlight panel, click on the Spotlight Privacy… (Priwatność Privacy…) button. Drag and drop your Macintosh HD folder icon on to that Privacy panel, wait 10 seconds, and then click the [-] button to remove it from that panel. Click Done. Spotlight will begin to index your startup drive, your Mac may begin to slow down, and this indexing process may take a few minutes.

You can click the Spotlight 🔍 menu extras button and can observe indexing in progress.

Once your drive is indexed, you should be able to perform Spotlight syntax requests from that menu extras button, or from a Finder Window search field. You can narrow your search results by proper use of Spotlight keywords.

Hey Nekato2!

It may help with a bit more info if possible.

Can you say the results of clicking the Spotlight search icon? As well as the results of pressing Command and the Space Bar?

Can you say what model of Mac you have as well? If you are using an external keyboard? And likewise, if this started happening after any changes?

Thanks.
