I am unable to AirDrop a Numbers file from iPad to iPhone, stuck on Waiting message

Prior to moving from iOS 15 to 16, I was able to AirDrop my worksheet (stored on iPad under Numbers app) from my iPad 7th Gen to my iPhone SE 3rd Gen. After iPad had 16.2 installed, AirDrop displays ‘Waiting…’ message and Numbers file does not send. Installing 16.2 on iPhone did not resolve the issue. I am able to AirDrop Numbers worksheets from iPhone to iPad. I am able to AirDrop a photo from iPad to iPhone and vice versa. I have tried a number of AirDrop fixes suggested here and from other sources and none seem to resolve my problem. I welcome any advice or suggestions, thank you.

Have similar issues with airdrop from iPad <—-> iMac or vice versa.

Found that if I try and airdrop using the “contacts only” the icon that shows up, but when trying to send it states on sending side, waiting. The recipient device doesn’t ever bring up a window to accept and then save to the right place.

However if I set airdrop to everyone, a different icon shows up, I tap that and it works. One is a user, the other shows device name.

Try it and see if it resolves your issue.

Thank you for your speedy response! My previous setting was already ‘Everyone’ when the issue first surfaced, and I had subsequently changed it to contacts only. I did try setting both devices back to to ‘everyone for 10 minutes’, which seems to be the new flavor of the option, but the result was the same. I did not see the different icon as you described…however I do see the different icon for my wife’s phone - but frustratingly enough the file does not send to her device either. I fear I have found the answer, but not one that I had hoped for. Under Settings>Numbers>Document Storage, I have the ‘On My iPad’ option selected, and the subtext reads ‘Store documents only on this iPad and do not make them available on other devices.’ I am speculating that under the new iOS you cannot share Numbers files except via iCloud-perhaps someone more knowledgeable on the subject can speak to this. I do note that there is an explicit message more or less to this effect on my iPhone if I try to share the file via iMessage or email. My wife’s phone is still on iOS 15 and there I am able to share a Numbers sheet via text and email. I checked the subtext on her phone under the ‘Document Storage’ option and the subtext is the same, so perhaps the intent was there all along and iOS 16 is merely implements that intent.
