Whats App App Wont Open

I had to rebuild my Mac Mini M1 because of issues with Ventura 13.1.

However What's app won't open despite being downloaded from WhatsApp App site and also tried it from the app store. It seems to install OK but when I click on the app in the dock it just sits there and then comes up with WhatsApp app quit unexpectedly with options to Reopen, Report or Ignore.

Reopen doesn't work. I did have the web based app open so I closed that down, uninstalled everything and reinstalled with no luck. Had the same issue with NordVPN but that resolved itself after fiddling around.

Anyone able to help please ?

Mac mini, macOS 12.6

With the Offending Application completely closed.

Hold the SHIFT key and click the WhatsApp icon in the Applications Folder

This will be a Safe Launch of the application and not the computer

Still having issue >>>>

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

I was sat here in the early hours thinking about the problem. I believe the recovery into Monterey from a Time Machine backup that was saved from Ventura was the problem. I restored everything when I could have ignored the Applications section and just reinstalled the apps as I needed them.

Anyway I decided to experiment and "upgraded" the Monterey I was now on to Ventura. And indeed all the apps started working again. Now, I went to Monterey because I was getting audio drop outs with AirPlay to my Apple HomePod with Ventura 13.1. Bluetooth speakers were fine.

I wonder if I did another clean of the SSD and started again with Monterey but this time did a restore from Time Machine without the Applications things would work ? I'm not sure how many Ventura legacy "tendrils" would be left in the user profile and other data ? Maybe it's something I just need to try. Bizarre but it seems the Monterey system and Ventura restore of data and apps caused some sort of issue with apps being open but not open so when opening fresh they bombed.

Thoughts ?

Technically and starting in macOS 10.15 Catalina, TM Backup will only backup what is in the User account at the time the backup was made.

TM Backup does not make or contain a Full and Complete Working Copy of the Operating System.

After Wiping the Drive Clean and reinstalling Monterey / Ventura from scratch.

It is suggest to Only Migrating the User Account and nothing more

Issues that may have existed when the TM Backup was made, if restoring everything, will be migrated to the New Installation.

This would effectively negate and pollute the new Pristine installation of the Operating System and re-introduce the same issues again.

IMHO - it would be best to only install new application etc Directly from the Developer or the Apple Apps Store.

Bizzare

I don't get Loading Startup Options but just the Macintosh HD and an Options icon. So it won't start in safe mode. I'll try holding button longer ?

I thought I would see what happens is I reinstalled Monterey but when I tried it said disk cannot be downgraded...yet its already Monterey. This all goes back to bloody Ventura .

I'll try again to go in safe mode

Somehow read your name as Philip. Apologies

Interestingly the audio dropouts, just a couple of seconds every few minutes. With AirPlay and my HomePod has returned right away with 13.1. Bluetooth is ok so I could live with Bluetooth on my Sonos and try the HomePod when we get a few more OS updates. Or just go back to Monterey. I’ll have a coffee and think about it

No problem

Another quick question if thats ok. If I do a fresh rebuild using Monterey all I'd want to restore from Time Machine is my user profile as you suggested before but also my emails and documents. From memory do they come under "Data" ?

Info on the web is a bit ambiguous

Anything that is presently in your User Account ( Home Folder ) will be contained in the TM Backup.

Just one caution regarding Photos.

Moving from Ventura to Monterey may not be a issues but if going below Big Sur would be an issue because to the pics in Photos Application are in a format.
