for accessing gmail via their website (aka: webmail) , a user can use any web-browser software which has standard features & support.
you may use "Thunderbird" email-client to access gmail or any other email-service , Thunderbird is like apple "Mail" email client software , but made by opensource devs, etc, its also cost-free, & free.
and Chromium is slightly better than Chrome , as Chromium has much less proprietary components (closed-source & unknown stuff) & software.
( if you need proprietary features from google, then use Chrome ).
and, you can also use "Firefox" web-browser, made by Mozilla , it is another opensource, & free, and cost-free software.
