With the iOS 16 upgrade to Apple Home, does the Apple TV need to remain on? It seems to have fixed my recent issues with the app, but it was never a problem previously.

Well I know that is supposed to be the case, but since Ios16 if the Apple TV isn’t on the entire home app shows everything in an updating mode, and yesterday I was getting a message that said hub not available. Not an issue when Apple TV is on. I have both the phone and tv updated to latest software available. I suspect there’s a minor programming issue, but I am looking at adding security cameras and if I am going to use HomeKit I need to know it’s going to be reliable.

The home hub needs to be in the network and connected to power, but you can set it to sleep mode when not use for its TV function. Sleep mode wouldn't affect HomeKit functionality.
When it isn’t working as supposed to, and you believe to have done everything right, then I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).
I actually paid very close attention since last night as to what’s happening. The “updating” status does finally clear when the Apple TV is in sleep mode, but it takes between 2-10 minutes (yes I actually clocked it). When I arrive home it’s the same thing, which leads me to believe this is related to problems others are having around automations. I believe Apple is aware of issues so hopefully it will be corrected in a future update.
