convert imac to monitor

I have an A1312 iMac in working condition. I want to use it as a monitor for my MacBook Pro, but I do NOT want to take it apart and change out the electronics.

Is there a way to use this machine as a monitor without having to take it apart?

You cannot use an iMac as a monitor for a modern day MacBook Pro as the MacBook Pro is not meeting the requirements for target display mode:

iMac models introduced in 2011, 2012, 2013, and mid 2014

The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable.

24-inch and 27-inch iMac models introduced in 2009 and 2010

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:

The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort cable.

Darn -

That means that if I want to use the iMac monitor, I have to buy a HDMI conversion kit, take the monitor apart, install the kit, and then (if I didn't break anything during the process), still have a 2011 monitor.

For about $200, I can buy a new 4K monitor. Sigh... It won't be a GOOD 4K monitor, but even so - it will have higher resolution AND a warranty.

Seems like my old iMac is bound for some impoverished student for a give-away price...

I was going to suggest “Luna Display/Duet Display( new name, same thing) -you’d have to buy it, but you wouldn’t have to open up your A1312 iMac… as WheelieNick posted, Target Display Mode is pretty much a “no”… so, Luna Display/Duet display would be your only option

I've decided it will be simpler to CraigsList the iMac and buy another monitor.
