How do I download my pictures from iCloud to my MBP?

I'm trying to save my phone pictures into my Mac. The message I get is that there is not sufficient disk space. My icloud storage has enough space for the pictures and video. My mack has 104.2 GB of free space. My Icloud is using 127GB on my 250GB on my plan. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. No reconciliation between Mac and iPhone.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.7

You can either connect the device directly or use iCloud Photos.
