Unable to open JPG file airdropped or emailed from phone

Hi, I have this issue for 6months now where I am unable to open photos sent from my phone either via email or airdrop. Once I download the photos from my email on my macbook, the jpeg file becomes corrupted somehow. I can view photos on gmail preview? However if i email photos individually and save image - i can view the photos on preview.

Otherwise this popup comes up saying : "the file IMG_5301.jpeg could not be opened - file maybe damaged or uses format preview cannot recognize"

I have an iphone 12 pro iOS 16.1.2 version and macbook pro15 macOS 10.13.4 version.

Please help.
