Gyroscope stays on while the display is turned off

This seems like a newly introduced behavior in iOS 16: The gyroscope of several iPhone models (11 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, 13 Mini) seems to stay on while the display is turned off which frequently leads to unexpected screen rotations when unlocking the phone.

To me this looks like a bug, but maybe it's intended to be a feature? (iPads now also seem to change their orientation while the display is turned off.)

Any idea when it will be fixed? 16.3 didn't change anything.

Example: You're using the phone in portrait, you're locking it and putting it sideways into your pocket, you're pulling it out again, unlocking it while holding it relatively flat and suddenly your last app is in landscape.
