You can use both displays at the same time and the keyboard and trackpad if you don't close the MacBook Pro.
You aren't supposed to close it, unless you absolutely only want to use 1 display.
Go to System Settings->Displays and set the Studio display to Mirror if you want to see the same thing on both, or keep it as extended, if you wan to be able to drag windows to it from the MacBook.
The recommended option is to use Extended so you have more desktop space and can utilize both displays at the same time. You can drag an app window to the edge of the Macbook display and it should then let you move past it to the Studio Display. That way you have much more desktop room for windows.

The 14-in display is beautiful high end high resolution display, for which you paid dearly. Don't close it! Use both displays together as an "Extended Desktop".
My son used to open the MacBook Pro on the desk below, and we put the 'Big Display' up on a a 6-in block of wood above. It worked a treat.
.
The screen was just light gray, same as my MacBook Pro. When I closed the MBP, its content started to display on the Studio Display. I don't know how you are supposed to use the keyboard on the MBP, but the display is working great.
Thanks for your reply.
have a great day, Frank
When you close the MacBook Pro display, by definition, the MacBook Pro goes to sleep.
To avoid that sleep you need to have provided:
an external Power source that is adequate -- not all displays provide enough power to avoid sleep.
an external keyboard.
an external pointing device.
in some cases, it may still take some "fiddling" to avoid sleeping instead of 'closed display Mode'.
The Apple article that separately described 'closed display mode" has been removed, suggesting that Apple no longer favors the use of that feature.
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.
Define "blank".
Do you see your background image? Or do you just see a black screen?
Is the display set to Extend or mirror in System Settings ➡️ Displays?
Thank you. Great answer. I get it now...
