Mini Mac to 30"

  1. My MacBook Pro can properly connect to my 30" cinema display
  2. I bought a new Mac mini and fully copied the MacBook Pro
  3. Upon startup I then get the view on my 30" screen but at 70% of booting up it freezes! (This does not happen when I boot up my smaller 20" screen)

any thoughts??? I will try to load a picture:

The Mac mini graphics is part of the Intel CPU, and behaves differently from the separate AMD GPU used on other Macs. Some display configurations that the Mac mini specs say should work (and do work on other Macs) don't work properly on the Mac mini. That your display does work initially when booting, then stops, indicates that the display and adapters are all working, and there is a software problem, probably with the Intel graphics driver. Are you running the latest Catalina (10.15.3)?

Since your Mac mini is new you can try Apple support, but they won't be too enthusiastic about supporting such an old display, and non-Apple adapters. It may be worth getting the complaint into their system, though.

I bought a Mac mini last year and was planning to use my old (2001) Apple display, but it would not work, even with the correct adapters. I ended up buying the LG UltraFine 4K Display

and am very happy with it.

one more question Mr Malcom: in an older blog I did see that Mr "beamengine" did get his mini-mac up and running w the 30"? (see blog: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8613976?answerId=34118186022#34118186022). So, I am still a bit confused why mine does not boot up. is there perhaps a separate graphics driver that I can or should download? Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

One other thing to try is booting in Safe Mode.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

This disables accelerated graphics, which is normally turned on sometime in the boot process, maybe at the point when your display fails.

If it works only in Safe Mode then there is definitely a problem with Catalina's graphics drivers.

Thanks a lot Malcolm, this is clear and confirms my fear that this may not be solved very easily. One strange aspect is that I should mentioned is that I do also have a 20" (old) cinema display that does work. But my 27" old cinema display (yes, I love those old Apple cinema displays), does not work. So to recap the problem more completely: the 20" works, but not the 27" and neither the 30" (setup same for all). (and, to be sure, on my MB Pro all three displays do work).

I almost feel and fear as if the mini-mac somehow does not have enough power to push through. But, yes, I do have the latest software on my mini but I guess I will now have to contact "support" (my last and least-preferred resort).

Sorry, I forgot about those success stories with the 2018 Mac Mini and 30" display. They were over a year ago.

There are two differences from your setup.

1) They use the hard to find Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

https://www.amazon.ca/Apple-MB571Z-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Adapter/dp/B001IF252C?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duc12-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B001IF252C

instead of the StarTech. The StarTech one should work, but doesn't have the USB port for the display's USB cable.

2) That was late 2018 and early 2019, so they were not running Catalina.

It's probably not the adapter since the display does work initially while booting, so must be a Catalina problem.

Thanks again Malcolm. Unfortunately safe mode does not work, nor does restore mode. Notably, I have indeed tried booting in safe mode (the shift button) and even in restore mode (the command-R) but in both those attempts I do not even get it to boot up. In other words, there the whole boot-up gets stuck at 20/25% of the apple screen (before I even get to to regular home screen as in the picture). I did not know what to do after that and am working again from my 20"now.

Malcolm, you are a genius: today my Uptab USB connector arrived. I swapped it with the previous one that worked with the Macbook Pro and 30", and with the Cinema Display 20". Now the new connector (the Uptab) works w the Mini Mac connected to the old 27" Cinema Display! So, now I run both the 20"and the 27"from my mini mac!! Yahoo. Thank you a lot for the good advice.
