Badge in Messages shows unread messages - but there aren't any unread messages

On my iPhone SE, iPad Pro, iMac, and MacBookAir, the badge on Messages continues to show unread messages. But having checked all four devices and cleared all unread messages, why does the badge (red circle with number in it) continue to show that I have some?

Hi Jeff Ryer,

It may be possible that you've enabled unknown sender filtering in Messages. Per Block, filter, and report messages on iPhone:

"Go to Settings  > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

When this setting is on, you can only see messages from people who aren’t in your contacts when you go to Filters > Unknown Senders."

Messages from unknown senders will be filtered into the designated location but may still show as unread.

Should that not be the case, reach out to Apple Support to investigate further.

Regards.
