Does AirPods Max support Aux?

I am struggling to get the male lightning to female aux cable working with my new AirPods Max. What am I missing here? This device works fine for iPhone -> analog out functionality. It should be plug-and-play for a simple cable.

The dongle page says that it works for all devices that have a lightning connector and support iOS 10 or above, which the AirPods Max do.

Do I need a product like MR2C2AM/A? This is a poor product and most users are saying that this $35 cable lasts less than 6 months of use.
