Basically, the new operating system installed itself without my authorisation and basically deleted all my photos and files when I awoke. My cloud storage wasn't large enough to cover it so I do not have back ups. Is there any way to retrieve these photos?

Operating system updates do not delete photos or files, so something else must have gone wrong.
The only way to get your content back is to restore from a backup.
FWIW, you don't need to back up to the cloud; backups can be done to a computer as well.
