Ventura 13.2 File Sharing broken

After the update to Mac OS Ventura 13.2 none of my Macs are unable to access each others' files. I am using iMacs, Macbook Air M2 and MacMini M1 on my network and everything was working flawlessly for years until this update (including latest additions of MBAir M2 and MMini M1).

The said, affected machines are still able to access the files on other Macs, on the same network, that have previous versions of Mac OS.

Sometimes, after turning off File Sharing and restarting the machines and turning back on File Sharing I am able to access the shared folders on internal SSD, but never on external disks. All of these external disks I've been using all the time shared between all of the machines.

Anyone?

I reported this, presumable, bug to Apple.

Just to share what helped for me:

Symptom:

  • No connection, always the "Beachball", no backups possible

Setup:

  • Use Mini M1 as a server (with several external NVMe disks shared)
  • Connection with several MBPs (all M1) - Use Carbon Copy Cloner for automated Backups
  • All Ventura 13.2

First I tried to fix it with the solutions mentioned here

  • Stop - reboot - start file sharing of M1 Server again -> not solved
  • Eliminating custom icon on top-level -> not solved
  • Tried to renew connection to the server via SMB://10.... (Server IP) -> not solved

Finally I remembered that I also have a Raspberry pi 4 which is connected via CIFS to the Mac mini (also for backing up files)

Then I tried to connect my MacBookPro with CIFS instead of SMB - I entered cifs://10..... (Server IP).

E voila since then it was possible to reconnect to the MacMini Server. I reconnected all laptops using cifs:// and the connection is up and running - I know cifs is more or less an outdated dialect of SMB - but hey, who cares. I was able to backup 45GB file via (Gigabit LAN) within 9 minutes, so performance seems OK.

Until then the system is up and running (since Sun., 5th) Don't know if "CIFS" was the key (or a combination of everything I tried), but it seems that this solves currently my situation until Apple will come up with an official solution.

I will observe it and give an update if something changes

Yeah it absolutely sucks. I don't know what is going on but it's definitely frustrating to say the least. I literally just got it working again by turning off file sharing, and turning off "smbd" under settings > privacy & security > full disk access > smbd. Shutting down the Mac Studio, then starting it back up and turning back on file sharing and "smbd" full disk access.

So it's working right now. I'm able to access files on my Mac Studio from my Macbook Pro. But I can almost guarantee you, that if I restart the Mac Studio, file sharing will not work again. I just don't understand. This has never been an issue for me on previous versions of MacOs. Ventura has by far been the worst MacOs experience I've ever had. Continuity Camera doesn't work with my Mac Studio either. Works just fine with the Macbook Pro.

My recommendation would be for everyone to give Apple Feedback on this directly by going to Product Feedback - Apple. Choose the Mac you're using, select the appropriate version of MacOs and let them know that these file sharing issues are affecting you. My hope is that the more people we have bringing this to their attention, the sooner it will get fixed. All I know is that file sharing is a basic function that had been working flawlessly in previous versions of MacOs, until Ventura happened.

We are having the same issue, calls to Apple's upper support seems to fall on deaf ears. I hope when it is fixed they let us know (either by some background OS update) or detail it having been fixed in version 13.3. Our solution has been to install the external shared drive to a Mac running an old OS. So now our Thunderbolt 4 RAID is running at Thunderbolt 2 speeds over the network through a 2013 iMac. The days just go longer.

Apple really needs to make an easy way to drop back an .* OS version when an update breaks something.

    • After launching SSH for SFTP connections on the miniMac server (option = -> Settings -> General -> Sharing -> Remote Session), I connected with the client " FTP-Mounter ". I appreciate its function where links appear as mounted disks on the Desktop. Nonetheless, it was exceedingly slow. I tickled and worked the server side trying to improve the speed, but to no avail. Then, on a whim, I installed a new client : " CloudMounter ", with similar functions. Well, my problem was on the client side because now file transfers are blazingly fast with SFTP.

I have the exact same issue. I spoke with apple senior advisors.

They had me do all of the usual crap, Reset the NVRAM, open in safe mode, activate and deactivate file sharing.

Nothing worked.

Their desperation attempt was to have me reinstall the latest OS so I have a "clean copy".

I have three systems, two Mac Pros and an iMac Pro.

I have reinstalled on my Mac Pro and that didn't work. Now I am going reinstall on my other two Macs and see if that fixes the communication issue.

I have a feeling it will not.

Oddly, I updated the other two Macs (Mac Pro and iMac Pro) on Tuesday on 2/28 and my Mac Pro was still on the last version of Ventura and communication was fine.

On 3/1 my Mac Pro updated overnight and once all three were on the same platform that is when the file sharing failed.

I can see the other computers but I can't connect. Sometimes the other computers can see mine and connect but cannot access any of the drives though it can see the files.

This update was not tested and screwed up any of my business productivity and Apple doesn't have an answer for it.

For me turn off file sharing restart and back on fixes the problem. Over WiFi random APs (Unify, TP link).

After years as a windows user I decided to switch to Apple and I regret this decision every day. Ventura, iOS got soooo many basic bugs. How users can't see this. I am restarting phone and laptop twice a day. I wish there is some arm alternative for windows...
