Ventura 13.2 File Sharing broken

After the update to Mac OS Ventura 13.2 none of my Macs are unable to access each others' files. I am using iMacs, Macbook Air M2 and MacMini M1 on my network and everything was working flawlessly for years until this update (including latest additions of MBAir M2 and MMini M1).

The said, affected machines are still able to access the files on other Macs, on the same network, that have previous versions of Mac OS.

Sometimes, after turning off File Sharing and restarting the machines and turning back on File Sharing I am able to access the shared folders on internal SSD, but never on external disks. All of these external disks I've been using all the time shared between all of the machines.

Anyone?

I reported this, presumable, bug to Apple.

    • After launching SSH for SFTP connections on the miniMac server (option = -> Settings -> General -> Sharing -> Remote Session), I connected with the client " FTP-Mounter ". I appreciate its function where links appear as mounted disks on the Desktop. Nonetheless, it was exceedingly slow. I tickled and worked the server side trying to improve the speed, but to no avail. Then, on a whim, I installed a new client : " CloudMounter ", with similar functions. Well, my problem was on the client side because now file transfers are blazingly fast with SFTP.

Some behaviour I had already seen, but did not mention on this forum. Between 2 Ventura 13.2 systems, I created two shared test folders : test1 (without icon) and test2 (with icon). Access to test1 is normal, all contained files appear and are useable. Attempted access to test2 fails, even requiring a hard restart since Finder aborts.

I had noticed that under the system ''/Volumes'' (visible through the Terminal) that both folders are mounted, as would normally be the case with a shared folder: it is mounted like a external disc. In Terminal, the test1 mount can be unmounted with the Unix ''umount'' command. The ''umount'' command with test2 fails to unmount.

I continue to believe the problem is with permissions. The icon associated with test2 is given the name ''Icon?'' (probably a shortcut) by macOS, which is a hidden file.

I continue to believe is that the problem is with permissions.

Pretty much any folder, apart from those in the home directory, can have a "custom" icon. It is the choice of the user. If you click on "information" for a folder, the icon appears at the top left. An icon with an extension ".icns" can be dragged to replace the default icon of the folder. Alternatively, one can also drag an image file with extension ".png" to create a custom icon. To delete the custom icon, simply select the image in the top left corner and delete it. This restores the default icon.

You can find many "custom" icons on line at sites such as : https://macosicons.com/ .

This way of managing icons also works for applications.

Have a client that is experiencing this, thanks to trying to fix an unrelated(?) Time Machine issue.

Original setup: 2020 iMac running 12.6 acting as Time Machine server and sharing several folders to another 2020 iMac and three late 2018 Mac minis running 12.6.3. Backups were wonky, updated to 12.6.3, still wonky, so upgraded to 13.2.1. Backups still wonky, and now file sharing hosed. Tried all the various suggestions in the various fora, but what seems to be working for the last two days was to force the iMac server to use SMB 1 by creating /etc/nsmb.conf with this content

[default]
protocol_vers_map=1

and to move the backups to the other iMac still on Monterey.

This is not ideal for them, but it seems to at least be working, and will hopefully remain so until a fix occurs.

I, too, had this problem. M1 Mini and M1 MBP. Both running 13.2 and then 13.2.1

My Carbon Copy Cloner backups would fail, usually after a few hours and my Time Machine backups would also fail.

Each time, error reported was that the remote volume was no available.

I've spent many hours on the phone to Apple.

There's a hint that they know about it, but wouldn't come right out and admit it.

After many hours of troubleshooting using the various hints and solutions found here, it still did not work.

Solution for me was to move the Mini (which is the server) back to Monterey.

All is good and has been working for two weeks now.

The MBP was still running 13.2.1. All still good.

I've reported this to Apple.

FWIW,

Kirby

Yeah it's getting kind of ridiculous at this point. We now have 10 pages of back and forth with each other and no real solution to this problem. Only Apple engineers are going to create an actual fix to this problem. I know plenty of us including myself have brought this to Apple's attention, whether through Apple Care or otherwise. I just hope to God they fix this in the next update. This is a basic networking function that I've never had issues using in previous versions of MacOs.

So here is what happened to me. Installed a new M2 Mac Mini (13.2.1) to be my household's new file server. I migrated all the users from an old iMac running el Capitan (10.11) using Apple's Migration Assistant. Client machines running 13.2 and 13.2.1 would hang on connecting to this server from day one. Clients running older MacOS versions could connect and copy files just fine. Amazingly, I could successfully connect and copy file FROM the Mini to the same laptops that would hang when connecting to the mini. Apple's suggestion was to re-install MacOS. They also claimed there were no "known" issues with file sharing on 13.2... All of this was in the last 3 or four days.

Anyway, I ultimately discovered that brand new users created on the mini worked fine, and this problem (for me) only occurred for users that had been migrated from the old system. I communicated all of this to apple, but have not heard back from them for a couple of days now, so I really don't know where this goes from here.

Apologies if this should have been a new thread...

I can't help but wonder if this isn't 100% fixed. I'm using the Ventura 13.3 update and it was working. But I restarted both my Mac Studio and Macbook Pro this morning and now file share is not working again. Something happens when you restart machines. Have you tried shutting down and restarting any of your Macs since updating 3 or your 4 systems?
